Marvin Barnes Stats
Introduction
Marvin Barnes was an American professional basketball player who played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) during the 1970s. Barnes was known for his impressive stats and his unique personality both on and off the court.
Early Career
Barnes began his basketball career at Providence College where he played for two seasons. He then transferred to the University of Rhode Island where he continued to excel on the court. In 1974, Barnes was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the NBA draft.
ABA Career
Instead of signing with the 76ers, Barnes opted to play in the ABA where he signed with the Spirits of St. Louis. Barnes had a successful rookie season, averaging 24.0 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. He was named the ABA Rookie of the Year and was also selected to the ABA All-Rookie Team.
NBA Career
In 1976, the ABA merged with the NBA and Barnes was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the dispersal draft. Barnes played for a number of NBA teams throughout his career including the Buffalo Braves, Boston Celtics, and San Diego Clippers. Despite his talent on the court, Barnes struggled with addiction and off-court issues throughout his career.
Legacy
Despite his personal struggles, Barnes is remembered as one of the most talented players of his time. He was a two-time ABA All-Star, and he also led the league in rebounding in the 1975-76 season. Barnes passed away in 2014 at the age of 62.
